Sofia

To my deepest regret and grief, my cousin Sofia passed away in a freak accident while swimming. I wish I could write some more about her properly but it's just too hard. I got on very well with her and we were great friends. Whenever Porto (my club) played Sporting (her club), we'd exchange taunts and gloat via SMS. Unluckily I couldn't be at her funeral because I had to get someone to Andorra the day before, and I hope she forgives me. I can't believe she's gone and just to think about it is terribly painful. We'll all miss you terribly, my dear cousin. :::

Ok, people, that's it. I'm off to enjoy a drive round bits of Europe. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to post from some far flung internet café. If not, have a nice summer and I'll see you in September. :::

Yesterday I watched Michael Phelps become the all-time olympic gold medalist with most medals. The swimming superman also breaks a world record every time he wins, and there's still more to go. Amazing. :::

I was rather shocked to find out Isaac Hayes had died yesterday. Funnily enough, I'd been listening to a whole bunch of his stuff lately, and remarking to myself how good it still sounds, even after all these years of hearing them over and over again. Hayes gave a distinctive touch to soul music, and reworked a lot of great songs in his earlier albums even though he had a great reputation as a songwriter. His renditions had a deep, echoey orchestrated, layered feel, and he managed to make his own very unique sound. I could go on and on about how great each individual song is, but hopefully the usual habit of playing a recently deceased star's records will now ensue, so you'll be able to hear them for yourselves, and you'll see how sampled and influential this guy really was.
Rest in peace, Black Moses. :::

Yes, it's that magic day when our calendars all go "08" and everyone loves this neat little arrangement in numbers! But if you miss this occasion to do something special to mark such a day on our Gregorian calendar, fear not! Next year, look out for the 9th of September, then it'll be the 10th of October. 2011 will have a magic 11th of November where it's all one's! Oooh! :::
My own personal silly season

I've been having depressing thoughts about myself. If ten years ago, someone had told me I'd be a petrolhead (sort of), a footy fan, a cellphone fetichist with a picture of his car as the background, or someone with bouts of vitrionic hatred towards certain sectors of society, I probably would've done myself in. Am I a thug? Then I try to tell myself that ten years ago I'd have liked the thought of being an architect, a voice-actor (I am, you know), a driver who prefers low consumption, eco-friendliness and civility over speed and thrills, someone more preoccupied with the happiness of myself and those around me than with money, and still drawing more or less prolifically and even cashing in on it. I get obsessed with assessing how I've turned out, if I've been making good choices in life, if I'm making my time worthwhile. Such thoughts can take me from melancholy to joy from one moment to the other, but I can safely say it's better to have such reflections than being an ignoramus. IMHO. :::
Soundtrack du jour: Radiohead Kid A and Amnesiac. Could easily have been released as a double album, though their separation still sticks in my mind as iconic. Kid A and Kid B, or Forgetful Person and Amnesiac. Cut some tracks your not so keen on so they'll fit on an 80-minute CD, and they go together seamlessly. Nice stuff, Thom & Co. :::
A weekend in the Algarve and back to work. That's cruel. It's like giving a thirsty bloke a sip of water then taking away the whole bottle and telling him he can't have any more until next Thursday. It's going to be drudgery until then, with two new projects to develop and work on like an ass (the mule kind, not the backside type). I want to see the Alps up close and personal. I want to sit and sip coffee at a charming little Czech café in Prague. I want to break the sound barrier on a German Autobahn. I want my picture taken at Fucking. And I want to see for myself if Andorra is still cheap. :::
As Dark as Knight
Thursday, 31.July.2008 · Comments? · Permalink (869)

The Dark Knight had mouth-wateringly high expectations, so the fall, should there be one, would be high. So was I disappointed? Yes and no.
First, the "no, I wasn't disappointed as far as it being just a film. I was entertained for the (long) duration of the movie. The Joker's psychotic antics kept me on the edge of my seat, and I even got a sweat visualizing the sadistic torture and death as if it were real. Even taking into account the hype that always surrounds recently-deceased stars (some undeservedly), I really did find Ledger's performance absolutely amazing. The story wasn't as neatly tied up and beautifully crafted as Batman Begins, but not bollocksy nonetheless.
The disappointment came in two main things:
a) There was a definite loss of the gritty real feel of the first film. Paradoxically the first film's Gotham sets were fake, while the second used Chicago, yet I preferred the former.
b) The film was just too damn long. I won't go into spoilers, but let me just say too much isn't too good.
There was also some patriotic claptrap some evil Republicans probably sprinkled in the mix that edged the crapness percentage a little higher. All in all, good film, but its predecessor was better. :::
Hulk smash

Because I'm sick to death of opening up my blog seeing if there are any comments and having to look at my stupid helmet-wearing face, here goes a silly post.
FC Porto has hired Hulk. That's not a typo, and you can click on the link to verify that. This particular incarnation of Marvel's Emerald Giant doesn't go by the name Robert Bruce Banner, but by Givanildo Souza. And he's a dead ringer for Lou Ferrigno, although this may confuse younger readers who think he should look like Eric Bana or Edward Norton.
Anyways, after this brilliant signing, I'd urge FC Porto to buy the following:
Goalie: Mr. Fantastic.
Defense: The Green Lantern, Superman, Colussus of the X-Men and He-Man.
Midfield: Iron Man, The Silver Surfer and Batman as the playmaker.
Wingers: The Flash and, if there's enough money left, Daredevil (so good he can play with his eyes shut).
Up front: Hulk (already signed).
And I heard from a reliable source Benfica is close to signing on Dr. Doom and Darth Vader. Sporting Lisbon are trying Mr. Spock but he doesn't fancy the conditions. :::
